
Our History
Kalaya opened in 2019 as a small 32–seat BYOB in South Philadelphia, quickly capturing national attention for its bold flavors and soulful southern Thai cooking. Named for chef-owner Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon’s mother, the restaurant has since grown into an acclaimed destination, where vibrant dishes, fragrant curries, and Nok’s deeply personal recipes are shared in a setting alive with warmth, spice, and celebration. Recognized among the most celebrated Thai restaurants, Kalaya has redefined Thai dining with its authenticity, energy, and generosity of spirit.
Nok Suntaranon
Chef Nok Suntaranon is a James Beard Award–winning chef, restaurateur, and author whose journey from Trang, Thailand, to Philadelphia has made her one of the country’s most admired culinary voices. Inspired by her mother’s bustling curry paste stall, Nok opened Kalaya as a tribute to her heritage and has since been featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table and honored by Forbes 50 Over 50. With bold flavors, vibrant storytelling, and an unmistakable sense of hospitality, she continues to shape the future of Thai dining while sharing the culture and traditions that first inspired her.

Our Tasting Menu is available for dinner 7 days a week. It is required for parties of 7 or more everyday and is required for parties of 5 or more on Fridays and Saturdays. The Tasting Menu provides the perfect framework needed to experience a properly balanced Thai meal. Your party will be able to make selections for the majority of the courses, ensuring you have the flexibility to enjoy the dishes you love.
